From the Carvers Gap parking area at the top of Hwy 143, the Appalachian Trail climbs onto the Roan Highlands' open grassy balds, including Round Bald and Jane Bald, with wide views in every direction. It's known for rhododendron blooms in June. Weather on top can be much colder and windier than in the valley.
